The
Chalke Way is a coast-to-coast walking and cycling route along Britain’s
oldest and longest green road. From Weymouth and Seaton beside the
English Channel to Holme-next-the-Sea on the North Sea, this meticulously
researched and updated guide follows all or part of the the Wessex
Rudge, the Smuggler’s, the Ridge, Icknield and Peddar’s Ways. Along
its 400 mile length it passes some of the world’s most remarkable
prehistoric sites, including Maiden Castle, the Cerne Abbas Giant,
Stonehenge, Avebury and Grimes Graves.
More
than a trail guide, The Chalke Way is written with a passion and
understanding rarely found in a book of this type, and can happily
be read from cover to cover as a travel book. Already a classic
journey, the route may be undertaken as a single expedition or in
easy stages as suggested by sections in the book. Each includes
an easy-to-follow map, useful contact details and an evocative description
of the area, what to look out for and their historic context relative
to the story of this Neolithic highway.
John
Stuart Clark is a travel writer and cycle journalist, as comfortable
scrambling up mountains as pottering along in the saddle. Under
the pen-name Brick, he is perhaps better known as a political cartoonist
and illustrator.
An
update of The Chalke Way is currently being researched, expanding
it's content to cater for walkers as well as cyclists. Several copies
of the original bikers guide are still available at the discount
price of £8:00 (excluding postage). To order contact
